Smart IT Security Tips

There are a lot of things to be concerned about when one has a business network. Our top five security tips are:

First back up your data: It's critically important to back up your data. Your data contains everything that you need to run your business, including backup of your servers, desktops and firewalls, emails, financial data and other critical data and records. Without backup to the vital information, it's nearly impossible to recover from the disaster or server crash.

Secondly, purchase an antivirus, anti-malware, and anti-spyware software. It’s important to protect your investment with these types of programs, which could be monitored and managed. This will help keep your data from getting into the wrong hands.

Third, purchase a business Great Firewall. Firewalls are the number one method for protecting your business network from hackers, viruses and malicious software. Make this purchase your top priority. Reconstruct or diagnose your firewall to make sure they’re adequately protecting your systems.

Fourth, schedule security assessment and evaluations at least two times per year. It’s important to protect your investment and keep it secure. Security assessments and evaluations are an excellent way to discover vulnerabilities and weaknesses in your network. We recommend businesses have these performed at least twice per year.

Fifth and lastly, choose a secure and complex password and change it frequently. The password should be complex, change frequently and designed in ways that they cannot be easily guessed. Here are some password tips;

• don't tell anyone your password

• don’t write down your password anywhere

• make sure your password is easy for you to remember but hard for someone else to guess

• if you think there's even a chance someone else might know your password, change it.

• Change your password periodically even if you believe nobody knows that or can guess that.

• Make sure no one is watching when you enter your password.

• Passwords now need to be 13 characters long for formally with the mix-up of alphanumeric characters. A past phrase like my weddings was in 2004, works well and is easy to remember.
